Does Your Car Need Maintenance After Lockdown?

Staying at home due to lockdown has meant that many of us have spent less time in our cars and on the roads. But, as the UK begins its roadmap out of restrictions, it is likely that more and more of us will start getting out and about in our cars.

Before doing so, it’s important that you make sure your vehicle is ready to head back out onto the roads and here at Kilnhurst Tyres, we’ve put together a handy checklist of things you should be looking out for.

How to check your tyres are legal and safe

Tracking being carried out

One of the first things you should check on your car is your tyres. The legal requirement for tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm but most experts recommend a minimum tread depth of 3mm. If your tyre tread does not meet the legal requirement then you could be prosecuted, and pose a danger when you’re on the roads- so it’s important to make sure they’re safe.

There are two ways to check your tyre tread depth. The most accurate way is to use a tread depth gauge, which is a device that can measure the individual grooves of your tyres. If you don’t own a depth gauge, then you can also do the 20p test. This test involves placing your 20p coin on various parts of your tyres. If you’re unable to see the edge of your coin then it means your tread depth is greater than 1.6mm and safe to drive.

However, if you can see the coin’s edge, then the tread depth is less than the legal requirement and your tyres will need to be changed.

Our team at Kilnhurst has more than three decades of experience when it comes to changing tyres, and can provide you with products for all kinds of vehicles, including performance tyres and budget tyres.

How to check your air-con is working

It’s recommended that you get your car’s air conditioning serviced every two years to check for any repairs that may be necessary. With the summer months not far away, this will be particularly important if you are to ensure you and your passengers’ comfort in your vehicle.

Before driving your car, switch the air conditioning on and off to check if it’s working. If not, then you should get it booked into a garage.

Air conditioning that hasn’t been used for a while can cause refrigerant gas to be released- which is harmful to the environment. So, if your car hasn’t had much use during lockdown it’s a good idea to get the air conditioning checked out.

How to check for faults with your exhaust

From leaks to smoke, there are a number of common faults that can be caused by problems to your exhaust.

If a problem with your exhaust has occurred, it is vital to address it as soon as possible. As well as potentially causing further damage to your vehicle, exhaust issues can cause harmful gases to be sent out into the environment.

There are a number of signs that can indicate to you that your car’s exhaust system has encountered an issue. These include:

  • Loud rumbling noises coming from your engine
  • Rattling sounds from your exhaust system
  • Vibrations on your pedals
  • Pools of fluid underneath your car
  • Rusty exhausts
  • Having to refuel more often

If you start to experience any of these problems, then you need to get your car seen immediately. Our team at Kilnhurst can deal with a wide range of exhaust problems, from repairs to full replacements.

How to make sure your brakes are working

Brake Discs being changed

Your brakes are one of the most important elements of your car, and any problems with them can be disastrous.

If you haven’t used your car for a while, then you should make sure your brake pads are in working order. Before you start inspecting them make sure your brakes have cooled down. You can often see your brake pads through your car’s wheel and it’s normal to see dust on them. So, if there is no dust present, this could mean the pads are coming towards the end of their life.

As well as this, if your brake pads are looking on the thin side then they may need changing- a mechanic can give you a more accurate assessment.

You should also keep an eye on your brake fluid. If it looks dirty, smells burnt or the levels have dropped on the reservoir it will need to be replaced.

Here at Kilnhurst Tyres, we offer a whole host of automotive services, including MOTs, servicing, wheel alignment and more. If you’ve not used your car for a while and are looking to get back on the roads after lockdown, then contact our team today.
